YGG: Shop Surcie
The Girl Boss generation is alive and well, and there’s nothing I love more than the success story of a woman owned small business. As someone who aspires to have my own business one day I find it so inspiring to see women following their dreams and killin’ it!
Through Something to Style Over I’ve gotten the chance to get to know some amazing business owners and learn about their products. I thought it would be so fun to share with y’all some amazing women who have followed their passion and opened up shop. That’s where the idea for “You Go, Girl” started. “YGG” is my new series that I am so excited to be launching here on the blog!
I will be highlighting female owned and operated small businesses from all different avenues. I think it’s so important to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes! I hope that y’all enjoy these women and their products as much as I do, and look forward to getting to learn a little more about their business and who they are. Are y’all ready to meet our first feature?!
Meet Taylor and Mary, the sister duo behind Surcie!
Taylor and Mary started Surcie in the Fall of 2017 and have been open for almost two years! Surcie is an online fine stationery and gift shop that specializes in wedding suites, event branding and custom design. Surcie is based out of Raleigh, NC and while the ladies do host pop-up shops, they are based solely online at shopsurcie.com. Taylor and Mary like to think of themselves as a “one stop shop” and enjoy helping customers find the perfect gift and item for every occasion!

Q. How did you know you wanted to start your own business?
A. While we both have worked for others, being an entrepreneur has always been our calling. It seemed like there was never a perfect time to start our own business, so after moving back from New York, we decided to dive head first into Surcie and now here we are!
Q. How did you decide on this niche?
A. We wanted to find something to do that never felt like a job. We originally intended to sell mostly gifts with stationery on the side, however, after planning Taylor’s wedding we fell in love with everything about wedding stationery and personalized favors. Our focus since then has been primarily wedding stationery and favors while also selling fun and thoughtful gifts for every occasion.
Q. What was the hardest part about starting your business?
A. The constant thought of “will people like my product?” which definitely becomes more personal when you are curating collections based on your own taste and ideas. It has taken a lot of reminding ourselves that everyone has a different style and opinion... and that that is ok! We definitely have developed thicker skin over the past 2 years!
Q. Where do you gather inspiration?
A. Whether we are traveling, out to lunch, or in a yoga class, we are constantly inspired by our surroundings! We love looking through magazines, social media and the beautiful world around us to fill up our mood board.
Q. What has been your biggest achievement within your business thus far?
A. I would have to say our biggest achievement was when we had our first full package bride who we worked with from their save the dates to party favors and everything in between. It is always such a great feeling when a bride trusts you with everything and it all goes off without a hitch!
Q. What are your current goals/plans for your business?
A. We are currently working on a new collection of wedding suites and party packages. We have found that brides and event planners become overwhelmed with all of the choices when picking out wedding invitations, paper and stationery. We hope that our new collection will make this process more streamlined and less overwhelming… not to mention it will allow brides to have a cohesive design from their save the dates to their day of paper products. We have been working on this collection for about 4 months now - as soon as we land where we want to be and complete our new website, we will be ready to launch! We hope to become a go-to source for anyone planning parties, events and weddings.
Q. What missions and values do you align with your business?
A. We strive to provide high quality, beautiful products and a stress free experience for all Brides and party planners.
Q. What is one piece of advice you could give other women who are wanting to start their own business?
A. Stay brave, motivated and confident! And to always remember you can do anything you put your mind to. Nothing happens overnight!
I loved getting to know Taylor and Mary and learning more about Surcie and their gorgeous products! Follow them on Instagram @shopsurcie and check out their online for all of your invitation and gift needs. They seriously have it all!
