Home Tour: Philip Mitchell's Nova Scotia Cottage
I always love seeing shots of designers own homes because it shows their true style and who they are. When I found Philip Mitchell’s Nova Scotian seaside cottage on Veranda I could tell that Mitchell and his husband put their heart and soul into this home. After reading the article it was true, it was a labor of love, and the house contains many family heirlooms and collectives.
The 18th-century home was in bad shape when it fell into the couple’s lap. When they heard developers were looking to tear down this nugget of history, the couple sprung into action and purchased the home, known as the “White Cottage.” After they had further inspection of the home they realized it had severe rot and water damage so they chose to take the whole house apart, rebuild the foundation, and re-use existing architectural pieces that they could. The couple did a fabulous job sticking to the integrity and the history of the home and preserving the charm and character of the original.
In the Veranda article it discusses the area has a long history of ship builders so the locals have excellent craftsman skills that came in handy for this project. Once the 2.5 year renovation was complete, it was time for Mitchell to work his magic and start decorating. The home is light and airy, with seafaring accents, antique furniture, and bold art.
I absolutely adore this home and I hope you do as well!
There’s always Something to Style Over!
